ABOUT THE PROJECT
This project was significantly more difficult than we were expecting, and we were expecting it to be difficult. The challenges of working with new technology are not to be underestimated. That being said, we gained valuable experience in working with VR, and the Vive in particular, that will be invaluable in future projects.
To others attempting similar projects, we would advise to be extremely conservative with the scope of your game. Making a VR game takes much longer than a normal one, and we found ourselves pressed for time and dropping at least one feature we thought would make it in, despite the game's relatively small scale. You have less time than you think.
Furthermore, an absolutely essential step when attempting projects like this is to find a workspace you can use consistently, and do it quickly. This is easier said than done. It takes a fairly high-end computer to run VR, so options can be limited. This step is even more important for the Vive, as you also need a space physically large enough to play in. The Vive can also be a hassle to set up, so factor that in to your time. This can vary depending on whether you're setting it up on specific computer for the first time and whether you need to be able to set it up in multiple locations.
